Originally from New York, Mrs. Essner attended Bard College for Dance Composition and received her BA in Art & Social Change at New College in San Francisco with additional graduate studies in Dance/Performance at Mills College. Mrs. Essner was an artist-in- residence at ODC Theater (San Francisco) and has been commissioned by San Jose State University and San Francisco State University. Mrs. Essner is a recipient of the Bessie Schonberg Choreographers & Dancers Residency at The Yard, her company was commissioned by Alaska Dance Theatre and her work has been selected for Dance Theater Workshop's Freshtracks.

She has studied Dance/Performance at the graduate level at Mills College and has trained in dance with: the Merce Cunningham Foundation; NY Academy of Ballet; Alonzo King; Arturo Fernandez, Clark Center NY; Aaron Osborne; the New York School of Ballet; Margaret Jenkins; Ellie Klopp; Janice Garrett; and Joe Goode. She has been resident choreographer for San Francisco State University, participating in the American College Dance Festival in 1998 and San Jose State University.

Ms. Essner is a certified Pilates instructor with over 25 year experience working with all populations in both clinical, fitness and private practice settings. She currently is working as a teaching artist for Center for Arts Education NYC, and Arts Connection NYC. In 2012, Essner completed the DEL program at 92nd street Y which is based on the DOE NYC Dance Blueprint.
